Walt Disney appointed George Borgfeldt and Company based in New York City, to handle the licensing rights for Mickey Mouse. George Borgfeldt already represented Steiff in the USA and so Steiff became one of the first companies to be granted a license to make Mickey Mouse. By the end of 1931, such was the demand for Mickey Mouse toys, that Steiff made 30.000 toys in one year alone. By 1936 the number had increased to 53.000 Mickeys and further 13.000 Minnies.
