An extremely rare, possibly undocumented??? , UK Radio Transcription to celebrate Mickey Mouses’ 21st Birthday. Possibly a BBC radio programme?? Presented here on 7 x 12 acetate discs, playing at 78rpm. It’s the complete radio programme, I’ve listened to all the discs. Presumably from 1949 – this is when Mickey would have been 21. This date is also suggested by comments made by Roy Rogers whilst talking to Mickey in the programme, he mentions completing the Disney movie’Melody Time’ earlier in the year, this movie was released in 1948. After a search on line, I can’t seem to find any information about this radio show at all. It’s possible this may be the only copy in existence? The radio show consists of Film and Music stars of the day talking to Mickey Mouse & congratulating him on his birthday, intermixed with Disney music and songs by some of the stars. It features quite a lot of Dialogue with Walt Disney himself talking to Mickey. The programme is narrated by Robert Beaty, a Canadian actor who moved to work in the UK in 1936, (often working with the BBC). Here’s a brief rundown of what happens in the show. Introduction by Robert Beaty, a few hello’s from famous artists like Bing Crosby. Song by English singer Anne Shelton. Walt Disney talking to Mickey and other Disney characters. Child actor Bobby Driscoll features and then a story by Uncle Remus. Shirley Temple features and gives Mickey a birthday kiss. Wish Upon A Star song. Dinah Shore features and talks about being in England recently, she then sings a song. The story of Hiawatha read by the narrator. Talking to the Andrews Sisters who then sing a 21st Birthday song to Mickey. Roy Rogers & Trigger wishing Mickey a happy birthday and saying’Hello to all the boys and girls over in England’, then singing a song from the movie Melody Time. The Seven Dwarves sing a song. Anne Shelton & Joseph McNally with the George Mitchell Choir sing Disney song’Once Upon A Winter Time’. Walt Disney talking to Mickey: He asks Mickey, now that he’s 21, if he wants to become a man, or remain a mouse – Mickey responds that he’d prefer to stay a mouse, with further dialogue about why he made that choice. Robert Beaty reads some credits; he mentions that Anne Shelton and a few others along with the Augmented BBC Orchestra were here in the studio in England and that others such as Walt Disney were recorded in the States. In the main the records are in VG+ condition and play well for being both 78’s and acetates. There’s some crackle and ticks, but generally good sound quality. The first 2 discs I’d grade VG. A little of the lacquer has flaked off on the edge in one place on each disc. There’s some minor cracking of the lacquer on the outer edges of these 2 discs, but they play through OK – please see the photos. Labels are generally clean for 75 year old labels, the label on the 1st record has started to peel away, this can be seen in the photos, showing the metal disc beneath. All records are double sided, there’s 14 sides of radio programme in all. The labels state “Private Recording made my Levy’s Sound Studios, London”. A nice copy of this very rare Disney collectible. PLEASE ZOOM IN ON THE PHOTOS, THEY FORM PART OF THE DESCRIPTION. These 78’s have been sat in storage for a very long time, whilst they are in nice condition, I’d recommend a professional clean before playback to ensure the best quality sound.
